Baylor played its first game at McLane Stadium on Sunday night and routed Southern Methodist, 45-0. Wiz correspondent Greg Laughlin made the trip to Waco and checked out the 45,140-seat facility, which is built on the banks of the Brazos River. It was the first time the Bears played on campus since 1935. The team played the last 54 seasons at Floyd Casey Stadium, about 4.5 miles away.
The plan is for McLane to play host to year-round entertainment attractions — weddings, tractor pulls, cookoffs, high school games and big concerts. The university will spend more than $450,0000 to subsidize these events in the first year, part of the arrangement made when the school accepted $35 million from the city of Waco.
The Horned Frogs of Texas Christian opened their season in style on Saturday with a paycheck game against something called Samford and as expected, TCU cruised to a 48-14 victory. Greg Laughlin was among the announced 40,094 at Amon Carter Stadium.
Houston played its first game in the 40,000-seat TDECU Stadium on Friday night, but the Cougars turned the ball over six times and lost to Texas San Antonio, 27-7. Wiz correspondent Greg Laughlin was in attendance and sent along several photos. There are more images after the jump.
Mike Hlas, Cedar Rapids Gazette: Hlastradamus has returned to save the world. It starts with Ohio State playing Navy in Baltimore, the heart of Big Ten Country. No Braxton Miller, no problem for the Buckeyes.
Howie Kussay, New York Post: The return of the Pigskin Profit. Don't worry about a few wrong selections because you always have an ace in the 'Noles. Defending champion Florida State is going to have its way with Oklahoma State.
Boston Herald: Baylor has a big number (-33) against Southern Methodist, but the Mustangs must replace their starting quarterback, top running back, two 1,000-yard receivers, the top two tacklers and three-quarters of the defensive backfield. You get the idea. Take the Bears.
Jon Wilner, San Jose Mercury News: Swing and a miss on the Rutgers-Washington State pick, but a misstep this early is by no means an indication of things to come. Take the points and load up on Fresno State against USC.
Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel, Fox Sports: Two of the best, brightest get together and predict the Week 1 games. Now, about that selection in the Texas A&M-South Carolina game....
