The lesson in all of this is that it's important to stay one step ahead of the law. Holtz's legacy, you may recall, included leaving three programs on probation, including Notre Dame. Minnesota and South Carolina also were hit with sanctions that occurred while Holtz coached those teams. But Granny had skipped town before the NCAA hammer came down.
