The San Diego Union-Tribune reported at 9:57 a.m. (Pacific) that Chuck Long is out as San Diego State coach. ESPN at 11:24 a.m. (Pacific): "San Diego State has fired coach Chuck Long, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Joe Schad on Sunday."
Seriously, ESPN, why can't you just give others credit when you get beat on a story? Schad is one of the best at this.
On to Kansas State. Mark Janssen of the Manhattan Mercury is reported that Bill Snyder was at Kansas State president Jon Wefald's campus home before yesterday's game between the Wildcats and Iowa State. Janssen also reports that there is a rumored team meeting Sunday night at the Vanier Football Complex.
He also writes: "There is strong evidence that former Snyder defensive coordinator Phil Bennett (Pittsburgh DC) has visited with KSU athletics director Bob Krause by telephone. Could it be about a "coach-in-waiting" type of position?
"While Bennett returned a pair of phone calls two weeks ago, he did not return multiple calls this week. When Snyder resigned near the end of the 2005 season, he told the team of his decision in a private meeting the night before the formal announcement. It makes sense that he would like to do the same if he's being re-hired.
"The silence and privacy of the last two-plus weeks looks and feels very Snyder-like."
Update: Bill Snyder is the new (old) coach at Kansas State.
