Hal Mumme, pictured with Stephen Strup, the chief of the Division of Urology at the University of Kentucky, will undergo surgery for prostate cancer Wednesday in Lexington.
Mumme, the former New Mexico State and Kentucky coach, said he started feeling exhausted during his final season as Aggie coach. He believed his condition was brought on by working long hours in the Las Cruces heat, but blood tests indicated the possibility of cancer.
Mumme, 56, ignored the warnings for six months, then after his firing on Dec. 1, he decided to undergo a biopsy. The Jan. 9 procedure confirmed his worse fears.
"Pure stupidity," Mumme said.
Strup believes the cancer was caught early and does not appear to have spread beyond the prostate. Doctors won't know for sure until pathology reports come back about a week after the surgery.
