So a college football blogger steps away from his computer for a few days and all hell breaks loose. The Big Ten becomes the Big 12, the Big 12 becomes the Big Ten, and the Pacific 10 becomes the Pacific 11. Go figure. ...
As a good friend pointed out, this is all meaningless, since the World Series of Poker is in full swing.
This high-stakes game of expansion is far from over. Despite Monday's announcement that the 10 remaining members of the Big 12 would bond together and make a go of it, plenty of hard feelings remain. Example 1A: Watch and listen to what T. Boone Pickens grumbled about Missouri.
Other reaction from around the league:
Kevin Sherrington, Dallas Morning News: Big 12 commish Dan Beebe was helped by two overriding factors: Texas' desire for its own TV network and Texas A&M's refusal to go west. Without both, this unlikely preservation would not be a possibility.
Sam Mellinger, Kansas City Star: Texas decided the conference was worth saving, but only under its terms, and only after talking with at least two other conferences. This is Texas' conference. The rest of the league is happy to join in.
Berry Tramel, Oklahoman: As the story goes, Beebe convinced TV networks to pony up hundreds of millions of dollars for a weakened conference. And Texas, which knows where every available dollar in collegiate athletics is stashed, suddenly said, "Wow"? Sorry. Don't buy it. Plus, winners and losers in the new Big 12.
Bryan Burwell, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: It's puzzling why Beebe waited until his house was being vandalized before reacting. Why did it take all of that, plus Texas being courted by everyone but the English Premier League, to make Beebe realize he had a giant problem on his hands?
Kirk Bohls, Austin American-Statesman: The funeral has been called off, but how long will the Big 12 last?
Richard Justice, Houston Chronicle: The Big 12 almost certainly will add two teams at some point, and if Houston plays it right, it could be one of those teams.
Mike DeArmond, Kansas City Star: Missouri has mixed feelings about the league news.
