The Tim Brewster era at Minnesota could be coming to an end within hours.
ESPN 1500 in Minneapolis reported Friday that Brewster will be out as coach if the Golden Gophers lose Saturday's game at Purdue. Citing anonymous sources, the station reported that the university has already drafted a news release and media plan.
Attempts by the St. Paul Pioneer Press to reach Brewster or athletic director Joel Maturi were unsuccessful, but Minnesota spokesman Garry Bowman told the newspaper: "I can't confirm or deny anything in ESPN 1500's report. All I can tell you is that Tim Brewster is our head football coach until Joel Maturi or Tim Brewster decide otherwise."
Brewster, in his fourth season as coach, has a record of 15-29. The Gophers are only 6-20 in Big Ten play. The team enters Saturday's game having lost five in a row.
University president Robert Bruininks, at a conference of community leaders at TCF Bank Stadium on Wednesday, began his remarks with a tongue-in-cheek apology. "It will be difficult for me to speak intelligently on effective community leadership when I have a 1-5 football team."
