Oregon State

The 2010 season was a disappointment for Oregon State, which failed in its quest to be bowl-eligible for only the second time since Mike Riley returned as coach in 2003. Running back Jacquizz Rodgers left early for the NFL and his brother, James, is trying to return after two surgeries on his left knee. Oregon State plays at Wisconsin on Sept. 10 and plays host to Brigham Young on Oct. 15.

Nevada Las Vegas

In December 2009, Bobby Hauck left the comfort and beauty of Missoula, Mont., for the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas, but he likely didn't envision the odds stacked against resurrecting the UNLV program, which has only one winning season since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 1996. Hauck's first team finished 2-11 and Year 2 doesn't look much better. However, his roster is stacked with young players and better days are likely a year or two away.

Boston College

If only Boston College had an offense to go with that defense. The Eagles were 109th in total offense and 13th in total defense in 2010. Coach Frank Spaziani, in an attempt to shake things up, has brought in Kevin Rogers as offensive coordinator. Rogers spent the last five seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings. The schedule is kind early and cruel late, so it's important for Boston College to pile up victories early. The Eagles open at home against Northwestern.

Northwest Missouri State

Sharp poster from Northwest Missouri State, a Division II team located in Maryville, Mo. The Bearcats are regular playoff participants and won the 2009 national championship, one of three national titles won by the program.

Rutgers

Greg Schiano has done a remarkable job at Rutgers, but last season's 4-8 record is cause for concern. The Scarlet Knights lost their last six — all in Big East play — and gave up 69 points in falling to Cincinnati. Three former Dave Wannstedt assistants have joined Schiano's staff, including offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti. He is Rutgers' third offensive coordinator in as many seasons.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin had an unexpected recruiting score this summer. Russell Wilson, who was North Carolina State's starting quarterback for three seasons, was released from his scholarship and transferred to Wisconsin. Because he had graduated from North Carolina State, Wilson is eligible to play this fall.
