Big things were expected of Mike Leach when he became Washington State coach on Nov. 30, 2011. Thus far, it has been a disappointment.
OK, it is early in Leach's tenure at Pullman and perhaps that statement is unfair. Granted Leach has been coach for only one 3-9 season, but outside of a 31-28 victory over rival Washington, there hasn't been much to build on.
The roster he inherited was lacking in talent, and the few players on hand didn't fit his style of play.
Bottom line: it's likely to be another long season. The Cougars open at Auburn and USC. Winnable home games against Southern Utah and Idaho follow, but powerhouse Stanford comes to Pullman In Week 5. That would leave Washington State 2-3 with the remainder of the Pacific 12 schedule to play. Finishing with four or more wins will be a Herculean challenge.
Thanks to Eric.
