Houston quarterback Case Keenum was having a big game Saturday night against Texas Tech, but the magnitude of his performance became clear when it was revealed he had completed eight of seven passes in the second half.
They played into Sunday morning in Houston, and when it was over, the hometown Cougars had pulled off a 29-28 victory over Texas Tech, their second stunning win over a team from the Big 12.
Check out these statistics: No. 2 in passing offense, No. 2 in total offense and No. 10 in scoring offense. The Cougars were an electrifying team in 2008, scoring no fewer than 23 points in a game. Quarterback Case Keenum, in his first season as the full-time starter, had 44 touchdown passes and only 11 interceptions. Now a junior, Keenum is among seven starters returning on offense, giving Houston the ingredients for a special season. Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Mississippi State are on the schedule, and the Cougars are capable of beating any of the three. Thanks to Brice!
Patrick Edwards, the Houston receiver who broke his right leg last fall when he ran into a metal service cart during a game at Marshall, plans on playing this fall.
"Patrick Edwards is coming back next season and I'm going to pick up where I left off." Edwards said in an interview with Houston TV station KRIV. "I am going to be better than that because I've got confidence."
Sports By Brooks sent along video of this gruesome injury suffered by Houston receiver Patrick Edwards in the third quarter of Tuesday night's game at Huntington, W.Va.
Edwards' right knee slams into an equipment cart that was parked behind one of the end zones. He suffered a compound fracture of his right leg. The Cougars lost, 37-23.
Brooks writes: "Not much you can do if you’re Houston at this point. Edwards, on the other hand, is likely to be lawyered-up in short order."
New coach Kevin Sumlin, who takes over for Art Briles, has been an assistant at Washington State, Wyoming, Minnesota, Purdue, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. The Cougars haven't won a bowl game since 1980 when they beat Navy, 35-0, in the Garden State Bowl. Sumlin will try to end the string Cougar bowl losses that has reached eight. Thanks to Ryan.
