Mississippi's Powe Told Police That 'He Couldn't Read'

Mississippi defensive lineman Jerrell Powe told police early Sunday that "he couldn't read" after he was cited for a noise violation after playing loud music in his apartment at The Exchange in Oxford.

Officer Zachary White said in his report that when his finished writing the citation, he asked Powe to read the bottom of it and then sign. Powe responded that "he couldn't read."

Powe was a member of Mississippi's 2005 recruiting class but was declared academically ineligible by the NCAA because he had not completed 14 core high school courses. He attended Hargrave Military Academy and applied for eligibility in 2006, but the NCAA still wouldn't clear him. Powe was allowed to enroll and receive academic and financial aid in 2007, but the NCAA still ruled him ineligible to practice or play.

Perhaps This Is How It All Came Down at Auburn

Although we may never know the real story behind Tommy Tuberville's resignation and the curious hiring of Gene Chizik at Auburn, there are several theories making their way around cyberspace. Larry Burton of Bleacher Report has a grasp of the issue and it centers around — you guessed it — agent Jimmy Sexton, who happens to represent Tuberville, Chizik and Mississippi's Houston Nutt.

All four cashed in on the deal, with Auburn taking the biggest hit. Not only did it have to pay Tuberville $5.1 million, it had to hire Chizik at a reported $2 million a year. Nutt got a hefty raise at Ole Miss and Sexton walks away with $1 million in commissions. Not bad for 10 days work.

Michigan's Loss Is Mississippi's Gain

Disgusted with a 3-9 season for a team with 9-3 talent, a Michigan fan recently decided to auction off his loyalty on eBay. The high bidder had exclusive rights to pick the fan's new team, and the winner was Mississippi ($301).

As part of the deal, the former fan had to make a video eliminating his Michigan items and declaring his loyalty to the Rebels. The description on the YouTube video says the proceeds from the auction were donated to the American Red Cross.

They're back on the football map in Oxford, thanks to the good people of Arkansas.

Houston Nutt, run out as Razorback coach a year ago, was quickly snapped up by Mississippi. The locals couldn't be happier because Nutt has the Rebels on the verge of becoming bowl eligible, something Mississippi hasn't experienced since the 2004 Cotton Bowl.

The Rebels are 5-4 after a 17-7 victory over Auburn, and Wiz correspondent Greg was on the scene last Saturday to sample some of the finer points of tailgating at the Grove.

Be it Las Vegas or Oxford, this is always a sign of a good time.

It's an easy trip from Tupelo to Oxford.
