Wiz correspendent Greg Laughlin started his weekend on Friday night in San Diego, where the hometown San Diego State Aztecs played host to the Air Force Falcons in a Mountain West Conference game.
The Aztecs won, 30-14, and became eligible for a bowl. San Diego State plays host to San Jose State on Saturday and a seventh victory would likely send the Aztecs to the Poinsettia Bowl, played in Qualcomm Stadium, the team's home field.
Greg Laughlin started his trip to the Colorado Front Range with a visit to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, site of Thursday night's San Diego State-Air Force game. It was another tough outing for the hometown Falcons, who gave up three fourth-quarter touchdowns and lost, 27-20.
One has to wonder about the future of Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, who has lost 10 of his past 12 games. And despite squaring its record at 3-3, San Diego State has yet to put together a complete game.

You might remember Jeff Schemmel. He resigned as San Diego State athletic director in 2009 after an investigation by the school found that Schemmel requested reimbursement for expenses made for an extramarital affair in Alabama.
Schemmel is now managing director, college division of JMI Sports, an athletics consulting firm which was co-founded by John Moores. Moores is being forced to sell the San Diego Padres because of he recently got a divorce. His ex-wife claimed in court documents that Moores had an affair during their marriage.
UCLA, which received a waiver this week to play in a bowl with a 6-7 record, could nudge out San Diego State, which might finish 8-4.
The Bruins play Friday at Oregon in the Pacific 12 title game. Given that the team is a 31-point underdog, it's likely UCLA will finish 6-7.
San Diego State is 7-4 and finishes Saturday with a home game against Fresno State. Three of the team's losses have come against teams ranked in the top 25 (at Michigan, Texas Christian and Boise State). The most damaging loss came at home to Wyoming, which put the Cowboys a notch up on the pecking order for bowl-eligible teams from the Mountain West.
The league has only four contracted bowl games for five eligible teams. As it stands, San Diego State is the odd team out.
