Trev Alberts, who was terminated in 2005 by ESPN for declining to report to work, will be named athletic director at Nebraska Omaha. The school has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday to make Alberts' appointment official.
Alberts, who has been an analyst for CBS College Sports, wouldn't confirm that he was the choice. "I hope you understand ... I want all communication to come from UNO at this point," he told the Omaha World-Herald.
But the newspaper reported that the other three finalists were told they were no longer being considered.
Trev Alberts spent Tuesday on the Nebraska Omaha campus, interviewing for the athletic director's job. From all accounts, it's his job if he wants it.
The 38-year-old analyst for CBS College Sports spoke to about 60 people gathered in the student center ballroom, then fielded questions from the audience before meeting with reporters.
Steven M. Sipple of the Lincoln Journal Star wrote: "Bottom line, I
think he made it difficult for UNO Chancellor John Christensen to hire
anybody else."
After his playing career came to an end, Trev Alberts made a seamless transition to broadcasting, but his professional life could be in for another change in a matter of days.
Alberts is one of four finalists for athletic director at Nebraska Omaha, the Omaha World-Herald reports.
The irrepressible Alberts, 38, is the only finalist without experience in athletic administration, but he was quick to drop the name of his former coach when stating his qualifications.
