A look at Washington's 10-play drive that resulted in the game-winning field goal against USC. Quarterback Jake Locker was spectacular on the drive, twice converting on third down, including a third-and-15 situation.
The good news: The Huskies return 18 starters. The bad news: These guys have contributed to 14 consecutive losses, the longest skid in the land. OK, so we've established that there's nowhere to go but up for this once-proud program, and former USC assistant Steve Sarkisian was brought in to lead the Huskies back to the promised land. He's not getting breaks from the schedule-maker. Washington plays host to Louisiana State and USC and travels to Notre Dame in its first five games. Thanks to Amy!
Tyrone Willingham is laughing all the way to the bank.
Although he was fired as Notre Dame's coach after the 2004 season, he was still on the university's payroll as of June 30, 2008. This according to the latest Form 990 federal tax form that was filed by the university and obtained by the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.
Willingham was paid $650,000 from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008, the third year in a row he has been paid that sum since his firing.
That is higher than the base salary of current coach Charlie Weis and makes Willingham the second-highest paid employee on Notre Dame's payroll who is not an officer, director or trustee.
Turns out it was Mike Leach who was aboard Alaska Flight 601 from Las Vegas to Seattle on Monday. A passenger aboard the flight alerted Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times that he spotted Leach on the flight and Condotta and Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal have since confirmed that Leach talked with Washington officials.
Is Leach, 47, considering leaving Texas Tech, or is he using the Washington opening as leverage for a fat contract? He told the Associated Press on Monday that he "absolutely" wants to stay at Tech.
One cheap shot deserves another. Oklahoma defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger charges into Washington's Casey Bulyca, flattening the guard before the ball is snapped. The Huskies regroup and then Bulyca, center Juan Garcia guard Jordan White-Frisbee triple team and thug up Granger, who leaves the game because of injury.
Cheap shots are totally uncalled for and this site does its best to call attention to any cowardly act in hope the offender — or in this case offenders — will be punished. Here's a link to the Cheapest Shots of 2007 and 2006. If you spot a cheap shot, send an email at email@example.com.
Update: Bob Stoops said the Sooners are not "whining " about the play. "It's unfortunate any time any of that happens," he said. "But there is always a lot of rough and tough play inside so nobody here is whining about it.'' There was no update provided on the extent of Granger's injury.
