SEC Speed? Try an Extra Defender

No wonder Southeastern Conference defenses have been the rage this season. Check out these video frames sent to us by reader Jon. Louisiana State is caught with a 12th defender on the field Saturday night against South Carolina, but it somehow went unnoticed by the officials. Video of the play is at the bottom.

Update: Joe Person of the Columbia State reports that the Wilbur Hackett Jr., the umpire involved in the play, was a three-year starter at linebacker for Kentucky in the late-1960s.

If you search on youtube other angles of the same hit you clearly see that the QB was avoiding the ref. Therefore when the ref hit him. The qb fell back into the path of the other player and got tackled. The ref should get fired.

the ref not only moved in front of the qb path, but before the qb was towards him - look at his stance - he was indeed intending to take a shot at the qb

it wasn't a horrible hit and I am sure the qb wasn't hurt, but it was uncalled for and unprofessional ... should he loose his job? idk ... but it quite interesting to watch, the qb totally got pwned by the ref; who had no gear on LMAO

The ref clearly is manuvering to the right, staying in front of Garcia and blocking his path. He could have easily avoided Garcia by going to the left, back or even forward. I'm not a fan of either team, and not biased in any way, but that's clearly intentional. Whatever reason he had for purposely doing it, doesn't change the fact that he did it. Anyone who says it was an accident should watch it again. Garcia sees the ref and cuts to his left, Hackett goes to the right to stay in the way of Garcia, forcing Garcia to continue to his left and slowing him down, then when Garcia is close enough and slowed down enough, Hackett moves forward and shoulders him. Hackett not only slowed Garcia down enough to keep Hackett from getting hurt, but also gave the other team time to get guys into position.
