No wonder Southeastern Conference defenses have been the rage this season. Check out these video frames sent to us by reader Jon. Louisiana State is caught with a 12th defender on the field Saturday night against South Carolina, but it somehow went unnoticed by the officials. Video of the play is at the bottom.
Update: Joe Person of the Columbia State reports that the Wilbur Hackett Jr., the umpire involved in the play, was a three-year starter at linebacker for Kentucky in the late-1960s.
I guess he wasn't going to throw his own flag for LSU having 12 men on the field...

Thats just unbelievable.

Not ONLY did he fail to get out of the way of a ball carrier, he intentionally got in his way and delivered a hit!!!
There is no doubt this guy has to be fired.
Whoever is in charge of officiating there... if he doesn't fire him immediately upon seeing this has got to be fired himself.
You can't have umpires tackling players!!
THIS IS AMAZING!

haha...looks like the ref's football instincts took over!
Posted by: Jawagger | October 20, 2008 at 02:35 PM
this is a fake
Posted by: | October 20, 2008 at 02:38 PM
This is not a fake. I was at the game, and the crowd all saw the hit.
Posted by: cheezy | October 20, 2008 at 03:02 PM
Wow, what a horrible ref!
Posted by: ed_hochuli | October 20, 2008 at 03:14 PM
Totally Fake

You guys are a bunch of pansies. Fire the ref? Go play with your pink dildos.
It is clear that the quarterback was about to run right into the ref. The best way to counter a hard-charging mass is to put a little force behind your gumption to protect yourself.
Nevertheless, even if this ref were diabolical, I'd be embarassed to ask for his termination in light of his non-impact on the game.
Please, you guys are a bunch of wussies. I bet you'd have teared up if a 60 year-old ref took you down as well. Go play tennis.

Why such a big deal? It was a clean hit.

The comment by Billy John has got to be a joke right? What an idiot if he thinks it is ok for a ref to do something like that. Maybe Billy John should try and raise his IQ from 10...
Posted by: Kodak | October 20, 2008 at 03:37 PM
Billy John Wes Jake Stevens your clearly an idiot. i did watch the clip and the ref has plenty of room to stay out of the way if he wanted to...instead he clearly advances towards the qb, and not towards the clear pathe to his left....watch it again douchebag.
Posted by: james | October 20, 2008 at 03:39 PM
This guy has to be fired. I see no way to interpret this as unintentional.
Posted by: football fan | October 20, 2008 at 03:39 PM
all you have to do is watch the referees feet to see him move laterally towards the path of the QB. of course the QB was going to run into him,the dumbass got in front of him!
Posted by: james | October 20, 2008 at 03:46 PM
What is the deal with all of you who keep saying this is fake? WE SAW IT ON LIVE TV for crying out loud! Thousands in the stadium saw it over and over on the big screen! If you didn't see the game, or were too drunk to pay attention or remember what you saw, then why are you assuming that it is fake?
Posted by: Phil | October 20, 2008 at 03:55 PM
If you search on youtube other angles of the same hit you clearly see that the QB was avoiding the ref. Therefore when the ref hit him. The qb fell back into the path of the other player and got tackled. The ref should get fired.

Billy John happens to be right, you "sensitive" moron. Raise his IQ from 10? Are you handicapped or are you just ignorant? He couldn't function if he had an IQ of 10! Grow some balls! Or don't, if you are feminine. Who the hell cares?
Posted by: Jon | October 20, 2008 at 03:58 PM
the ref not only moved in front of the qb path, but before the qb was towards him - look at his stance - he was indeed intending to take a shot at the qb
it wasn't a horrible hit and I am sure the qb wasn't hurt, but it was uncalled for and unprofessional ... should he loose his job? idk ... but it quite interesting to watch, the qb totally got pwned by the ref; who had no gear on LMAO

The ref must have had money on the game.
A blind man could see that was intentional.
Posted by: southerndethcult | October 20, 2008 at 04:07 PM
The ref clearly is manuvering to the right, staying in front of Garcia and blocking his path. He could have easily avoided Garcia by going to the left, back or even forward. I'm not a fan of either team, and not biased in any way, but that's clearly intentional. Whatever reason he had for purposely doing it, doesn't change the fact that he did it. Anyone who says it was an accident should watch it again. Garcia sees the ref and cuts to his left, Hackett goes to the right to stay in the way of Garcia, forcing Garcia to continue to his left and slowing him down, then when Garcia is close enough and slowed down enough, Hackett moves forward and shoulders him. Hackett not only slowed Garcia down enough to keep Hackett from getting hurt, but also gave the other team time to get guys into position.

Shot one, Runner is clearly going to his left...knowing he is part of the playing field umpire assumes the runner will avoid him and moves forward to free up room behind himself.
Shot two, runner makes a cut back, to his right, shifting his direction into a path already chosen by the umpire
Shot 3, momentum has now reached a place of no return for both...both prepare for the inevitable and brace for impact...runner lowers shoulder and umpire throws arm up in typical self-defense posture
Shot 4, big deal the inevitable happens...
I find it accidental - both made decisions that required less than split second timing, I find the runner making a cut back the worst decision of the two
I could care less about the pansy over-rated SEC - I'm Big 12 all the way and neutral and why isn't anyone saying a thing about the fully padded runner throwing a shoulder into the pad less umpire?
Ho-hum, boring - Hookem' Horns! #1

The guys a ref, he knows instinctively what's happening to his left and that means he knows a thundering herd will be coming from that area, his only move was to slip through the hole straight ahead of him to avoid being trampled - he had one choice and the runner cut back, it looks like he went for a tackle when the reality is he chose to run straight ahead and the runner created a defensive reaction that people want to turn in to some misguided purposeful intent...the game is called "kill the man with the ball" and refs know this, they've played too...he simply protected himself and now "after the fact" it's the second part of reality in "kill the ref" with whining because we lost...

What you saw...
What you think you saw....
What you think you should have saw...
The three corners of reality - always knew a SEC degree was useless....

You want him fired? Screw that. If a college can't take out an old man, maybe you should replace the QB.
