Our second look at spring scrimmages across the country. If you missed our first report, here's the link.
Air Force: Third-string quarterback Ben Cochran got to show his stuff after starter Tim Jefferson missed much of spring practice to concentrate on academics and backup Asher Clark suffered a knee injury.
Akron: Twenty-two players missed the scrimmage because of injuries. Senior quarterback Chris Jacquemain played well for a half, then struggled.
Arizona: The search for a quarterback to replace Willie Tuitama will continue into fall. Matt Scott, Nick Foles and Bryson Beirne all had their moments during the spring game, but nobody separated from the pack.
Baylor: Quarterback Robert Griffin completed 19 of 25 passes for 310 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in the 130-play scrimmage.
Florida International: The defense displayed a steady rush, relentless tackling and had four interceptions to dominate from start to finish.
Florida State: While offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher's group dominated nearly every scrimmage this spring, the defense struggled to find an identity. That all changed in front of an announced crowd of 36,000 at Doak Campbell Stadium.
North Texas: Riley Dodge, the expected starter at quarterback, finished 19 of 24, but had only 94 passing yards. That's an average of 4.9 yards a completion.
Texas: A blustery north wind turned Colt McCoy, who set an NCAA record for pass completion percentage in 2008 at nearly 77%, into a mortal quarterback. McCoy was only 11 of 24 for 95 yards.
Texas Christian: Could Gary Patterson's team improve on its 11-2 record? The defense, with open spots at safety, linebacker and in the line, could be as good as the No. 1-ranked 2008 squad.
