There has been much discussion about the Mountain West Conference adding Boise State and two other teams to make a 12-team conference with two divisions. But Mike Sorensen of the Deseret News has a better idea: Let the Mountain West get rid of some dead weight first.
Under Sorensen's plan, New Mexico, Colorado State and Wyoming would be dropped from the league.
Then he suggests adding Boise State and Houston, trimming league membership to eight.
Sorensen writes: "With eight teams, each school would receive a bigger share of BCS and NCAA Tournament money.
"The travel partners would line up pretty well with BYU-Utah, UNLV-San Diego State and TCU-Houston with only the Boise State-Air Force partnership not being geographically convenient. Having travel partners would save a bunch of money by eliminating all of the single-game trips in every sport but football."
Cutting the membership to 8? Ridiculous. This would require that some teams would get 4 conference home games, and others would only get 3. Kick out Colorado State and New Mexico? Why? It's not like these two teams have been horrible for the last 10 years. Both of these schools have pretty good programs. Horrible idea.

Football may be the most important issue, as he suggests, but it is not the only issue. And kicking out Colorado State is very, very short-sighted. I actually don't think Boise State is quite the plum people think they are. The second Boise State isn't dominant in football, what happens? Again, don't be short-sighted. If the MWC doesn't kick anyone out, I think the top three choices might be Houston. Nevada, and Fresno State.
