Charlie Weis is laughing all the way to the bank. The ousted Kansas coach — winner of six of 28 games at Lawrence — signed a five-year deal in 2011 at $2.5 million a year. Kansas still owes Weis $5.625 million of the $12.5 million deal, and the former coach will receive monthly installments through December 2016 to close out the contract. If our math is correct, that's a whopping $208,333 a month. It also means that Kansas paid roughtly $2.08 million for each of Weis' six wins.
Not only that, but Weis is still being paid by Notre Dame, where he coached from 2005-09. That school signed Weis to a ridiculous 10-year deal barely halfway though the first year of the coach's original six-year contract. When he was fired in 2009, Weis received an initial $6.6 million in severance. The payments have continued, with tax records showing Weis was paid around $2.1 million in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He will continue to receive annual payments from Notre Dame through December 2015, making Weis one of the school's highest-paid employees.
Totaled, Weis is now being paid $4.6 million annually not to coach, which considering his record might not be a bad thing.
One of the biggest myths is that coaches need to have a four- or five-year deal in hand so they can properly recruit. This is to assure a player that the coach will be at the school during the duration of their time at the university, guiding the young adult through the minefield of college athletics.
What a bunch of baloney!
The reality is that coaches often run players off who have no chance of contributing. A player's scholarship is renewed from year to year, meaning that it's not about the kid, it's about the coach protecting his fat contract.
One has to wonder why colleges continue to hand out longterm deals to coaches — the same coaches who often renege on a four-year promise made to recruits.
Yeah, Weis is a huge (pun not intended...but it certainly fits) double dipper, but we used to work with a world-class double dipper back in the day in a certain sports department. This guy was really good. He had excellent form...and he was fast. Oh, and not only did he double dip, but he also hovered over the salsa and/or guacamole while he ate...classy.
