It looked like Troy Calhoun might be on the hotseat entering 2014. Air Force was coming off a 2-10 season, with one of the victories coming against Colgate. But the Falcons were a different team last fall, finishing a 10-3 season with a victory against Western Michigan in the Idaho Potato Bowl. Air Force plays at Michigan State on Sept. 19.

San Diego State Becomes Bowl Eligible

Wiz correspendent Greg Laughlin started his weekend on Friday night in San Diego, where the hometown San Diego State Aztecs played host to the Air Force Falcons in a Mountain West Conference game.

The Aztecs won, 30-14, and became eligible for a bowl. San Diego State plays host to San Jose State on Saturday and a seventh victory would likely send the Aztecs to the Poinsettia Bowl, played in Qualcomm Stadium, the team's home field.

Air Force

Could be a make-or-break season for Troy Calhoun, who is 49-41 in seven seasons at Air Force. Calhoun immediately turned around the slumping program after taking over for Fisher DeBerry in 2007 and guided the team to six consecutive bowl games. But the winning has slowed the past three seasons and hit rock bottom with a 2-10 record in 2013.

New Mexico Runs Over Air Force

Some guys have all the luck. Wiz correspondent Greg Laughlin took in Friday night's Air Force-New Mexico game in Albuquerque and had the opportunity to meet Kathleen Danzer, the reigning Miss New Mexico.

Oh, that reminds us. They did play a game. The Lobos beat the Falcons, 45-37, despite completing only one pass. But that completion did go for a 28-yard touchdown. New Mexico did nearly all of its damage with the run game, which totaled 451 yards.

Air Force's Struggles Continue in Loss to San Diego St.

Greg Laughlin started his trip to the Colorado Front Range with a visit to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, site of Thursday night's San Diego State-Air Force game. It was another tough outing for the hometown Falcons, who gave up three fourth-quarter touchdowns and lost, 27-20.

One has to wonder about the future of Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, who has lost 10 of his past 12 games. And despite squaring its record at 3-3, San Diego State has yet to put together a complete game.

Air Force

Air Force took a step back in 2012 with a 6-7 finish — the first time since 2006 that the Falcons failed to win seven games. The lack of defense got much of the blame. The Falcons gave up 377 points, third most in program history.

Besides the annual Commander-in-Chief's games against Navy and Army, there is a biggie against Notre Dame on Oct. 26 at the Academy.
