Greg Laughlin spent last Saturday in Jonesboro, Ark., where he watched Appalachian State upend Arkansas State, 37-22, before 20,016 at Centennial Bank Stadium. This is the Mountaineers first season in the Sun Belt, and the victory was the program's first in 11 games played west of the Mississippi River. Appalachian State has won four in a row.

Who will ever forget that amazing September day in 2007 when Division I-AA Appalachian State stunned big, bad Michigan in the Big House? Now the Mountaineers have made the climb to I-A and things don't look quite as grand. The team was 4-8 in 2013, it's last in I-AA, and an upgraded Sun Belt schedule awaits.
Appalachian State, winners of three Division I-AA national championships, is considering a jump to I-A. On Monday, a committee recommended the Mountaineers make the move and the school's trustees will meet and vote on the idea next month. Chancellor Kenneth Peacock said it would take a minimum of three years to complete a move to I-A. Appy State, which stunned Michigan in 2007, opens 2011 at Virginia Tech.
