Colorado State

Colorado State is on an upward trend under Jim McElwain, who enters his third season as coach with a 12-14 record. But eight of those victories came in 2013, including a 48-45 victory against Washington State in the New Mexico Bowl. The Rams trailed by 22 points, but put on a furious rally to stun the Cougars.

San Jose State Drops Colorado State, 34-27

Wiz correspondent Greg Laughlin spent Week 7 in the beautiful state of Colorado. On Saturday, Laughlin took in the San Jose State-Colorado State game in Fort Collins, two days after watching San Diego State-Air Force.

Saturday's game was all about Spartans' quarterback David Fales, who passed for 431 yards in a 34-27 victory. The Rams were playing in front of 26,022, the largest crowd at Hughes Stadium in two years.

The price of doing business. Colorado State shook things up in December 2011. It fired athletic director Paul Kowalczyk and hired Jack Graham, whose first task was to fire coach Steve Fairchild. The buyouts of Kowalczyk ($910,000) and Fairchild ($350,000) were bad enough, but Graham spent another $250,000 on the Spencer Stuart research firm to find a coach. Total bill: $1.510,000. Ouch!

Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain accepted the job a week later, and the Rams finished 4-8 in his first season. Indications are that McElwain has the program on an upward trend, but this multiple-year rebuilding project.

The Current State of Affairs in Sports

You might remember Jeff Schemmel. He resigned as San Diego State athletic director in 2009 after an investigation by the school found that Schemmel requested reimbursement for expenses made for an extramarital affair in Alabama.

Schemmel is now managing director, college division of JMI Sports, an athletics consulting firm which was co-founded by John Moores. Moores is being forced to sell the San Diego Padres because of he recently got a divorce. His ex-wife claimed in court documents that Moores had an affair during their marriage.

Colorado State

Colorado State produced posters featuring linebacker Mychal Sisson, above, safety Ivory Herd, running back Raymond Carter and running back/return specialist Derek Good. The Rams, coming off consecutive 3-9 seasons under coach Steve Fairchild, will need to take advantage of a favorable schedule in the season's first five weeks.
