North Carolina

The journey has come to an end. North Carolina is our 78th and last Division I-A poster to be displayed for 2010. The Tar Heels made the most of this honor by producing two posters, one for the offense and one for the defense. North Carolina hasn't played since losing to Louisiana State, 30-24, in Week 1, but have a big game Saturday against Georgia Tech. Poster designed by Old Hat Creative.

Voting for poster of the year will begin Sunday. Because of the number of posters, the field will first be trimmed to 10 finalists. This is how it will be accomplished:

Posters have been tagged in seven groups and you'll be able to vote on one poster in each group. The winner of each group will advance to the final. The top three vote-getters among the runners-up will also advance. Voting will end Tuesday at midnight (Pacific).

On Wednesday morning, voting will begin for the 10 finalists, with the poll closing Friday (the 24th) at midnight (Pacific). The winner will be announced on Saturday, the 25th.

The defending champion is Iowa State.

Florida Atlantic

Florida Atlantic playing a "home" game in Detroit? It happens Saturday when the Owls "play host" to Michigan State in Ford Field. The game was originally to be played in Florida Atlantic's new on-campus stadium in Boca Raton, but construction is behind schedule and the facility won't open until next season. Hence the decision to move the game to Detroit, where "Spartans in the D" billboards — paid for by Florida Atlantic — can be spotted around town. The Owls will play their other four home games at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Utah

The Utes waste no time getting into the thick of the competition, playing host to Pittsburgh tonight in one of the marquee matchups of Week 1. Little known fact: Utah has won nine bowl games in a row, the longest streak in the land and second-longest in Division I-A history. Florida State won 11 consecutive bowl games from 1985-96.

Virginia

New coach Mike London shouldn't have to spend much time scouting Richmond, the Cavaliers' first opponent. He coached the Spiders for two seasons, compiling a 24-5 record that included winning the Division I-AA national championship in 2008. London, who is also a former Virginia assistant, faces a Herculean rebuilding job, but he grew up in Hampton and went to college at Richmond and that gives him ties to two of the most fertile recruiting areas in the state. Nonetheless, it's going to take him at least a couple of seasons to get the Cavaliers back to respectability.

Brigham Young

Timing is everything, right? With the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences in a state of tizzy, the Wiz felt there was no better time to display the poster schedule of the team that created the madness. Brigham Young has been at the center of the college football universe this week after its move for independence. The Cougars are one of five teams to win at least 10 games the past four seasons, and if you can name the other four, consider your day a success. (Answer at the bottom of the post.) North Carolina State

The Wolfpack spent much of 2009 losing the football and, as a result, lost a lot of games. North Carolina State ranked 114th in turnover margin in a disappointing 5-7 campaign. This for a team that was darkhorse choice to challenge for the ACC's Atlantic Division title. Tom O'Brien, a consistent winner at Boston College, enters his fourth season at North Carolina State with a 16-21 record. Is he on the hot seat? Not yet, but another tumble will turn up the pressure. The team will need to be at its best during a three-game stretch that begins Sept. 16 with a home game against Cincinnati. A road game follows at Georgia Tech, then a return to Carter-Finley Stadium to play Virginia Tech.
