Baylor

The Bears have not been to a bowl game since 1994, but the skid could be coming to an end because quarterback Robert Griffin is back and in good health. The electrifying Griffin, who missed nearly all of 2009 because of an injury to his left knee, has bulked up to 220 pounds. With Griffin back under center, Baylor steamrolled something called Sam Houston State, 34-3, in last Saturday's opener. The Bears should get another victory this Saturday against visiting Buffalo, then comes a trip to Texas Christian. A win against the Horned Frogs could springboard Baylor to a big season.

Army

The Black Knights haven't had a winning season since 1996, but better days are ahead. Rich Ellerson's first season as coach ended with a 5-7 record, giving the program much-need momentum entering 2010. The schedule is manageable, beginning with Saturday's game at Eastern Michigan. Army should be bowl eligible by the final two games — vs. Notre Dame on Nov. 20 at Yankee Stadium and vs. Navy on Dec. 11 at Philadelphia.

Oregon State

Little known fact about the Beavers under Mike Riley. Since Riley returned to Corvallis for his second stint as coach in 2003, he has a record of 56-33. But his record in September is only 12-15. That’s right, nearly half of his losses have come in September, so this is a team to play early. The Beavers' play Texas Christian, Louisville and Boise State in September this year, and only the game against the Cardinals is at home. Don't be surprised to see Oregon State with a 1-2 record entering October before staging a turnaround in Pacific 10 Conference play.

Ohio State

Feel the hype? This time it might be warranted. The Buckeyes have eight home games, including an attractive Sept. 11 matchup against Miami. Ohio State won't leave the state until an Oct. 2 game at Illinois, and from an outsider's viewpoint, the only games of concern are the Oct. 16 trip to Wisconsin and the Nov. 20 journey to Iowa. Terrelle Pryor is on the Heisman radar after leading the Buckeyes to victory in the Rose Bowl. Clearly, Ohio State is the team to beat not only in the Big Ten, but the land. Georgia Tech

Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Miami. There are plenty of contenders in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference, but until somebody figures out how to stop Georgia Tech's option, the Yellow Jackets remain the team to beat. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt is among seven starters returning for an offense that ranked No. 2 in rushing in 2009. The defense returns nine starters and adds coordinator Al Groh, who is installing an attacking 3-4 scheme. It likely will come down to two late-season games for Georgia Tech: Nov. 4 at Virginia Tech and Nov. 13 against Miami at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Marshall

The Thundering Herd made some impressive strides in 2009, but it wasn't enough to save the job of Mark Snyder, who was let go at the end of the regular season. Enter John "Doc" Holliday, who has spent the past 31 years an assistant at West Virginia, North Carolina State and Florida. Fall camp got off to a rough start, as freshmen Mike Fleurizard, Antwon Chisholm and Fred Pickett — all recruited by Holliday — were kicked off the team. The start of regular season won't be any easier. The Herd opens at Ohio State, which hasn't lost a season opener at home to an unranked opponent (Arizona) since 1967. Week 2 brings a matchup against West Virginia.
