Larry Fedora is 15-10 after two seasons at North Carolina. One gets the feeling that 2014 is going to be critical for Fedora. Can his Tar Heels break through, score a big upset or two and prove they can play with the big boys, or will the team struggle to find its identity and get roughed up in a three-week stretch against Clemson, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame?
North Carolina had little trouble adapting to Larry Fedora's high-paced offense in the coach's first season at Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels scored at least 27 points in every game but one.
But the defense needs to shape up. The team gave up an average of 25.67 points a game. Georgia Tech embarrassed North Carolina by scoring 68 points in the teams' Nov. 10 game.
The Tar Heels will be eligible for postseason play this fall after being banned last season because of NCAA sanctions.
You were not alone if you missed Monday's Independence Bowl. Although bowl officials announced that 41,728 tickets were sold, an estimated 5,000 actually made it to their seats.
Also not showing up: North Carolina, which was bludgeoned by Missouri, 41-24.
But an Independence Bowl would not be complete without a love story. One couple spent Monday celebrating their 10th anniversary at the game. They met at the 2001 Independence Bowl while playing in the marching bands of opposing teams.
Greg Laughlin started Saturday by taking in the Rutgers-North Carolina game at Chapel Hill, a 20-minute drive from Durham. The Tar Heels, despite five turnovers, held on for a 24-22 victory.
