Northwestern

Northwestern as put together back-to-back 5-7 seasons, fueling speculation that the Wildcats have lost their way under Pat Fitzgerald. Nonconference games against Stanford and Duke will be test the team, but there's no Ohio State or Michigan State on the Big Ten schedule. That should help Northwestern's quest to end a two-season bowl-less skid.

Is Northwestern poised to be the surprise team of 2014? The Wildcats staggered to a 5-7 record in 2013, a gigantic disappointment given the team's 4-0 start. But a loss at home to Ohio State started a string of seven consecutive losses that finally ended with a season-ending victory over rival Illinois. There was not a lot of offseason buzz about Northwestern. It's certainly humbling and given the competitive spirit of Pat Fitzgerald, it no doubt served as motivation.

Overtime Pays Off for Iowa Against Northwestern

Perhaps there was no better place to be Saturday than Iowa City, where the Iowa Hawkeyes engaged the Northwestern Wildcats in one of those old-style, slug-'em-out Big Ten games. Wiz correspondent Greg Laughlin took in the festivities, which ended with a 17-10 overtime victory by the hometown Hawkeyes.

Ignore those 445 passing yards Northwestern gave up to California freshman quarterback Jared Goff in last Saturday's opener. The Wildcats are 1-0, for chrissakes. Up next is Syracuse. Looming large is an Oct. 5 game against Ohio State.

Northwestern

Northwestern was involved in the craziest game of Week 1. The Wildcats raced to a 35-13 lead at Syracuse, then saw the Orange charge back for a 41-35 lead. But backup quarterback Trevor Siemian connected with Demetrius Fields for a nine-year touchdown pass with 44 seconds remaining and Northwestern won, 42-41. Keep an eye on the Wildcats. They play the next four games at home and have a good chance of being 5-0 when they venture back on the road for an Oct. 6 game against Penn State.
