San Diego State

San Diego State has been steady but not spectacular in the past five years under Rocky Long and his predecessor Brady Hoke. The team has won at least seven games and played in five consecutive bowl games. The Aztecs play two big road games in September — Sept. 12 at California and Sept. 26 at Penn State.

Navy's Improbable Victory Over San Diego State

ESPN's Heather Mitts interviews Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo during Tuesday night's Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. The Midshipmen lost four fumbles but somehow held on for a 17-16 victory over San Diego State before 33,077 at Qualcomm Stadium.

San Diego State Becomes Bowl Eligible

Wiz correspendent Greg Laughlin started his weekend on Friday night in San Diego, where the hometown San Diego State Aztecs played host to the Air Force Falcons in a Mountain West Conference game.

The Aztecs won, 30-14, and became eligible for a bowl. San Diego State plays host to San Jose State on Saturday and a seventh victory would likely send the Aztecs to the Poinsettia Bowl, played in Qualcomm Stadium, the team's home field.

Air Force's Struggles Continue in Loss to San Diego St.

Greg Laughlin started his trip to the Colorado Front Range with a visit to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, site of Thursday night's San Diego State-Air Force game. It was another tough outing for the hometown Falcons, who gave up three fourth-quarter touchdowns and lost, 27-20.

One has to wonder about the future of Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, who has lost 10 of his past 12 games. And despite squaring its record at 3-3, San Diego State has yet to put together a complete game.

The Current State of Affairs in Sports

You might remember Jeff Schemmel. He resigned as San Diego State athletic director in 2009 after an investigation by the school found that Schemmel requested reimbursement for expenses made for an extramarital affair in Alabama.

Schemmel is now managing director, college division of JMI Sports, an athletics consulting firm which was co-founded by John Moores. Moores is being forced to sell the San Diego Padres because of he recently got a divorce. His ex-wife claimed in court documents that Moores had an affair during their marriage.
