Wiz correspondent Greg Laughlin spent last Saturday in San Marcos, where he took in the Georgia Southern-Texas State game. The visiting Panthers won their seventh game in a row by holding off the Bobcats, 28-25.

Texas State hits the highwater mark for posters for 2014 with — count them! — six. The Bobcats of the Sun Belt Conference are coached by Wiz reader Dennis Franchione and the team finished 6-6 in 2013 — its first as a full-fledged member of Division I-A. Little-known fact: Texas State, with an enrollment of 35,568, is the fifth-largest university in Texas and one of the 75 largest universities in the United States. Enrollment at the school, which is located in San Marcos, has grown each of the past 16 years.
Texas State, coached by Dennis Franchione, is one of four new teams in Division I-A, bringing the total in big-time college football to 124. Franchione took over the program last year and guided the Bobcats to a 6-6 record, but that was predominately against I-AA competition. Now it gets tough, with the team competing this season in the Western Athletic Conference before a move to the Sun Belt in 2013. Texas State opens at Houston, then plays host to Texas Tech.
